I hope you enjoy reading the following journal entries. Some of the topics are based on questions from students in my yoga class and others may be points of interest based on my experiences.
I am not suggesting I am an expert in any of these topics, however I do rely on my training and practice when I write about yoga, meditation, and Buddhism.
I share these stories with you hoping you find them interesting and are able to gain insight into topics that may help you on your own personal journey.
As the Buddha once said to his disciples;
“Don’t blindly believe what I say. Don’t believe me because others convince you of my words. Don’t believe anything you see, read, or hear from others, whether of authority, religious teachers or texts. Don’t rely on logic alone, nor speculation. Don’t infer or be deceived by appearances. Do not give up your authority and follow blindly the will of others. This way will lead to only delusion. Find out for yourself what is truth, what is real.”
I always felt this was good advice and something I truly believe. No matter where the teaching comes from it is up to you to test it and discover if it works for you. The only way you can do this is to experience it for yourself.

Row, Row, Row your Boat…
I was walking the Don Trail today and stopped at this stream and it reminded me of a popular kids nursery rhyme, and a recent Dharma talk given by Bishop Tatsuya Aoki. Bishop Aoki is a Minister at the Jodo Shinshu Temple in Vancouver, BC. Most people are familiar with Row, row, row your boat, […]

Functional Yoga
This is a short blog about Functional Yoga. I began learning more about functional yoga when I attended Paul and Suzee Grilley’s Yin yoga teacher training program in May 2019. I was so impressed with the training session and their approach to yoga I plan to complete the next two units in 2020 and 2021. […]

How to Relieve Stress and Cultivate Joy
I’ve read many books by Thich Nhat Hanh. He is a famous Buddhist Monk and is well known around the world. At our Temple we practice mindful meditation based on his teachings so I would say I am a big fan of his. I wanted to write about his book, Peace of Mind, Becoming Fully […]

How to start a meditation practice
There is science behind meditation. According to John Yates in his book, The Mind Illuminated, he states that meditation is a ‘first person science.’ He says our mind is the laboratory and the different meditation practices or techniques are the tools. He considers it a science because the results can be objectively verified through repeated […]

The Center Within by Gyomay Kubose
One of the early books I read on Buddhism is by Gyomay M. Kubose called The Center Within. I would say it is one of my favourite books on buddhism. It is a small book only 126 pages, and is very easy to read and understand. Each chapter is based on a dharma talk he […]

Yin and Yang Yoga
I started on my yoga journey practicing Yang styles of yoga – Hatha, Vinyasa, and Ashtanga. It was only about 4 years ago that I began to practice Yin yoga. What I realize now is that you need to do both. In Paul Grilley’s book, Yin Yoga Principles and Practices, he talks about how yin […]

Searching for Enlightenment
The following is an essay I wrote when I was taking my two year Jodo Shinshu correspondence course with the Buddhist Temples of America (BCA). The type of Buddhism I follow is based on the teaching of Shinran Shonin. The essay below speaks about the religious practice and study in Buddhism and how it relates […]
